The Ground Where you Stand Is Holy

Sunday, March 16, 2014
During 8:30 am and 11 am services

Dr. Chu Chu Saunders, author of Ooops, The Book Every Girl Must Have talks to Agape’s preteen and teen girls about health and the sacredness of the female body.

Chu Chu Onwuachi-Saunders, MD, MPH is a mother, pediatrician,  public health consultant and former medical epidemiologist with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) where for over 10 years she was involved with issues related to children’s health and violence as a public health problem.  She was also a program officer at the Ford Foundation, Senior Deputy Director of Public Health in Washington DC and Philadelphia’s Deputy Heath Commissioner.  She has served as Senior Deployment/Operations Manager for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Katrina Assistance Project, a federal response that offered mental health services to both first line responders and the community in order to reduce trauma-related stress in the disaster-affected areas of Hurricane Katrina.
Dr. Saunders is currently a public health consultant and the author of a book for girl’s entitled OOOPS! “The book every girl must have”. (www.theooopsbook.com). During her free time you can find Dr. Saunders in a spinning class at the gym, wandering through a local farmer’s market or going to see a movie at a neighborhood theater. But she is most proud of the fact that she is a single mother of two, Ayana and Shakir.

Ooops supports young females through the experiences of being on their periods, and loves them to a point where they embrace it.

The story is based on “a day-in-the-life of” a set of eleven year-old twins faced with a significant puberty milestone–starting their menstrual periods. The twins explore the pros and cons of this event and learn that it is actually a gift–an internal clock that reminds them to reflect inwardly, pamper and take care of themselves each month.

Clyde Terry is a 20-year veteran of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and former US Marine. In 2003 he took a leave of absence from the Sheriff’s Department to assist the US State Department as an International Police Adviser in their rebuilding efforts in Iraq.

The experience changed his life. Soon after his return to Los Angeles he began working directly with ex-prisoners, gang members and the young homeless to transform their outlook and lives, and in 2009 was asked to lead the Sheriff Department’s Emerging Leaders Academy. To date, only 33 of the 465 participants of his programs (probationers, gang members and parolees newly released from prison) have been re-arrested. Many have also returned to school to obtain their high school diplomas or GEDs and have enrolled into college.
